I ask if you think you think you gained credit
by shewing yourself a good Horseman -- Remember
I will not allow you a fault either exterior or mental
with a little care & time I expect great things
of my friend

Notes

 1. The order of seven letters from mid-October 1779 differs from that in the Georgian Papers Online catalogue. The explicit date of the present letter precludes putting it straight after the Prince's boast about his reputation for horsemanship (GEO/ADD/3/82/44) or the report of Mr Lisle's encomiums (GEO/ADD/3/82/49), but it should come as early as possible. GEO/ADD/3/82/52 need not directly follow the despatch of a book with the undated GEO/ADD/3/83/44, for the Prince's thanks are clearly belated, while GEO/ADD/3/83/17 is dated before, not after, GEO/ADD/3/82/53 but responds to points in GEO/ADD/3/82/51 and GEO/ADD/3/82/52. The overall sequence GEO/ADD/3/83/16, GEO/ADD/3/82/50, GEO/ADD/3/83/44, GEO/ADD/3/82/51, GEO/ADD/3/82/52, GEO/ADD/3/83/17, GEO/ADD/3/82/53 seems the most perspicuous arrangement of the surviving letters.

Transliteration Information

Editorial declaration: First edited in the project 'Image to Text' (David Denison & Nuria Yáñez-Bouza, 2013-2019), now incorporated in the project 'Unlocking the Mary Hamilton Papers' (Hannah Barker, Sophie Coulombeau, David Denison, Tino Oudesluijs, Cassandra Ulph, Christine Wallis & Nuria Yáñez-Bouza, 2019-2023).

All quotation marks are retained in the text and are represented by appropriate Unicode characters. Words split across two lines may have a hyphen on the first, the second or both fragments (reco-|ver, imperfect|-ly, satisfacti-|-on); or a double hyphen (pur=|port, dan|=ger, qua=|=litys); or none (respect|ing). Any point in abbreviations with superscripted letter(s) is placed last, regardless of relative left-right orientation in the original. Thus, Mrs. or Mrs may occur, but M.rs or Mr.s do not.
